Location: Crystal City, Manitoba
Size: 9,600 sq. ft. (80×120)
We visited Maurice and his son Michael Vanwynsberghe who operate a generational family farm in Southern Manitoba. They farm approximately 5,000 acres, growing wheat, canola, yellow peas, black beans, and soybeans. Their family has been on the same farm since 1977.
Recently erected at Van Farms near Crystal City, Manitoba, this 9,600 sq. ft space is the perfect addition to their farm operations. With plenty of room for storage and equipment, this new building is boosting efficiency and productivity on the farm.
Increase The Lifespan Of Your Machinery
“The equipment over the years has just been getting bigger and bigger and we were having to pack everything really tight. It was just becoming very inefficient to store equipment.
We built this new shop big enough so we’ll be good for many years. Now it’s very easy to put our equipment away and keep it inside, saving the bearings, tires, and paint.”
Reclaim Your Workshop
“The new shop has allowed us to have an empty workshop. Otherwise we were using our workshop as machinery storage. That is not what we wanted.
Work On Equipment In Comfort
“Now, if we’re going to build or repair something, we don’t have to take equipment out and leave it outside. Now our workshop is basically empty and it’s ready to be used for whatever we want. Or we can work on equipment indoors, out of the elements.”
“We didn’t want wood… our first shed was wood and it’s just not solid. In high winds you can hear it creaking, and you have to worry about snow load. So, in 1997 we built our first steel shop and now this is our fourth steel shop. So, when it came to make the decision to purchase this shop, we knew we wanted steel.
Some farmers prefer wooden buildings and I would like to tell them, if you’re in it for the long haul, steel will last for generations to come. It costs more initially but in the end it’s probably going to be worth it to go steel.”
The Benefits of DIY Pre-Engineered Steel
“If you want to build it yourself, they’re easy to build. And if you’re a family farm you probably have some young help. It was three guys plus myself on the telehandler.
We did it in summer between spraying and all the other work on the farm. But it went up really quick. Once you get started bolting it on it goes fast. Probably took us three weeks in between spraying and everything.
We got someone to do the concrete, but we did save quite a bit of money installing it ourselves.”
Why Northern Steel Buildings?
“It’s been a great experience working with the team. The building, all the parts were there, everything came on time, and we had lots of warning when everything was showing up.”
The only problem was the eavestroughs, the colour was wrong. But Niko and Rick fixed that right away. They got us the new eavestroughs and other than that minor issue everything went really well.
So if we build a building again in the future, we’ll definitely go to Rick and Niko and get another building.”
